in-part:
FOUND BODY OF NEWBORN BABY WITH MOTHER: 8 children Orphaned by tragedy; Victims Badly Mangled.
Six deaths, including a baby born prematurely during the accident, resulted from a railroad crossing collision of a train and auto here at 4:27 p.m. yesterday. Eight children were orphaned by the tragedy. The dead are Leslie Robinson, 31, and his wife, Edith, 26, Sherman Thomas, 25, his wife, Ethel, 33, and prematurely born male child of eight months' gestation, and Mrs. Edna Robinson Disier, 19, a recent bride, whose husband, Pvt. Donald Disier, is stationed at Indiantown Gap, Pa.
Mrs. Disier, Mrs. Thomas and Leslie Robinson were sisters and brother.
The accident occurred at the East street crossing of the Rock Island Railroad a short distance west of the King and Hamilton manufacturing plant. The crossing is seldom used, and is unprotected by flagman or gates.
The automobile, driven by Robinson, was struck by an east bound extra train pulling 13 empty Pullman's and a caboose. The auto was carried on the cowcather of the locomotive a distance of about five blocks to Guion street, where the train was stopped.
Children Orphaned.

Mr. And Mrs. Robinson are survived by four children. Thomas, 9, Richard, 5, Ronnie, 4, and Bobbie, 3. Mrs. Thomas who was an expectant mother, had four children, Phyllis Ann Thomas, 3, Peggy Joyce Thomas, 2, Bradley Reynolds, 12, and Hugh Reynolds, 17, Mrs. Thomas was formerly the wife of Joseph Reynolds, from whom she was divorced.
Robinson, Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Disier were children of Lee Robinson of 407 East Michigan street. Their mother is deceased, Surviving relatives include four brothers, Bert and Hugh Robinson of Ottawa, Hansford of Camp Bellville, Ky., and Garland, who is in the army.
Thomas' survivors include Wayne Thomas, a brother, who is in the army, and three sisters, Inez, Pauline and Clora, A sister, Flora Thomas, is deceased. Mrs. Leslie Robinson was Edith Halloway, and formerly lived at Lexington, Ill., where her parents reside.
Mr. And Mrs. Thomas and Robinson were born in Kentucky; Mrs. Robinson was born in Ottawa, and Mrs. Disier was born in Marseilles. Since her recent marriage. Mrs. Disier had resided at the Thomas home. The Robinson home was at 1212 Division street.
Robinson was employed by the Libbey-Owens-Ford company, and Thomas by the Chicago Bridge and Iron company at Seneca. Mrs. Disier was employed at the Ford-Hopkins drug store in Ottawa, in the soda fountain and lunch room department.
Funeral arrangements for the accident victims had not been completed this afternoon, but services were tentatively planned for Wednesday.
Six years ago, Walter Robinson, brother of Leslie, was killed in an automobile collision at Superior and Chestnut streets.
On Nov. 1, 1940, Barbara Disier, the 8-year-old sister of Pvt. Disier (whose wife was killed yesterday) met death on U.S. Highway 6, when hit by an automobile on Brewery Hill.

Henry Thomas - The Great Great Grandpa!
Unfortunately I have not run across any old photos or stories of Henry Thomas... hopefully even a few stories still exist in the minds of people I haven't met yet. So the only things I know about Henry Thomas are the records I have diligently tracked down for about 10 years now, and they are few. Really this all began with trying to find him - some people search for Bobby Fischer. I was searching for Henry Thomas.
Henry Thomas was born in McKee, Jackson County, Kentucky on Feb. 26, 1890.
The earliest record I have of Henry is from the 1900 census which incidentally was the 12th census of the United States. He was 10 years old and living in Horse Lick, Jackson County, Kentucky. He could read but not write. He helped out on his father's farm. He lived with his parents and his brother Harvey and he had 5 little sisters: Sarildy (probably after Mary Moore's mother, Sarilda Pennington), Lina (probably after Gelina Hundley), Maudy, Lucinda (probably after Lottie Robison's mother, Lucinda Stevenson Lewis), and Angeline.

1900 Census
By 1910, the family had moved to Casey Creek in Adair County. By this point, Henry had learned to write, and he had even MORE sisters! Bessie, Emma, Cora and Ella. He also had a new baby brother, Jesse.
1910 Census
On June 5, 1917, Henry registered for the World War I drafts. He was 27 years old and living in Speck, Adair County, Kentucky. He listed no previous military service and is described as short and stout with blue eyes and brown hair.
WWI Draft Registration
In 1920, we find Henry Thomas living in South Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky with his wife Lottie Robinson and a small farm. They have twin baby girls, Clora and Flora, and two sons: Sherman and Wayne (my grandfather).
1920 Census
Between 1920 and 1927, Henry had more daughters: Violet, Augusta, Inez, and Pauline.
Henry died at the young age of 37 in Spurlington, Taylor County, Kentucky of acute peritonitis and appendix abscess on December 12, 1927. He was buried the next day at Union Ridge cemetery which is now called Spurlington United Methodist Church Cemetery, and I'll try to find his grave in August.

The Hunt Continues
Well after going through every birth record in Owsley County in 1852 - 1859, 1874, 1876 - 1879, I found a birthplace of Lee County, Virginia listed for James "Speck" Thomas. Having never heard of Lee County, VA as a place of interest in all this research before, this is exciting!
Now I'll have to tackle some surrounding counties and Laurel county's records.
On a sidenote - I think it was a prerequisite of recorders in those days to go through special schooling and learn how to write in the same tiny, scrunched-up, eye-jerking penmanship.

Genealogy Makes You Learn History
The earliest record we have found on James Speck Thomas places him in Owsley County, Kentucky in the year 1850. Owsley County had only been formed 7 years before that from parts of Clay, Estill, and Breathitt Counties, and it was only 51 years before that on June 1, 1792 that Kentucky became the 15th state to be admitted to the union with full consent from Virginia.
Kentucky Counties 1818
Kentucky Counties 1855
There were a handful of other Thomas families found in the 1850 census in Owsley County, and all but one listed their birthplace as Kentucky. There is ANOTHER James Thomas (40 years old) whose birthplace is listed as Virginia. He's married to a Polley (birthplace listed as KY, 28 years old) and their children Ann, Presley, Amanda and America. Whether or not there may be a connection to our James is still a mystery - I'm only using the birthplace as a clue to another investigation. It may mean nothing. Trying to figure out James Speck Thomas' parentage has been at a standstill now though for years - I may just request the assistance of you male Thomas' for DNA testing! Whose interested?
Where is the 1890 Census?
The 1890 census was mostly destroyed in a 1921 warehouse fire. Small fragments of the 1890 census survived and comprises less than 1% of the original schedules. Keep in mind that even the remaining census fragments do not contain complete counties, townships or districts. The loss of these census records has put a real kink in genealogy research during this time period, particularly when people seem to have begun moving around a lot more. It is much harder to pick up the trail of our ancestors when there is a 20 year gap between records. This would have been the first enumeration for Oklahoma so people with ancestry in OK will experience particular difficulty with this loss.
Good Sense Census Tips: The 1890 census schedules enumerating Union Veterans and widows of Union veterans of the Civil War did survive and is often used as a census substitute. Although, it is most likely not helpful if your ancestor was on the Confederate side, sometimes even they are listed by accident in these schedules, so it does bear checking.
The Veterans & Widows schedules for some states were lost.
Surviving schedules are extant for the following states: Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Indian Territories, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Washington DC and United States Vessels and Navy Yards.
Which 1890 Census Fragments Survived the Fire?
Alabama: Perry County - Perryville Beat #11 and Severe Beat #8.
District of Columbia: Q. Thirteenth, Fourteenth, R.Q. Corcoran, Fifteenth, S.R. and Riggs Streets, Johnson Avenue, and S. Street.
Georgia: Muscogee County - Columbus.

North Carolina: Gaston County: South Point Township and River Bend Township. Cleveland County - Township #2.
Ohio: Hamilton County - Cincinnati. Clinton County - Wayne Township.
South Dakota: Union County - Jefferson Township.
Texas: Ellis County - J.P. #6, Mountain Peak and Ovila Precinct. Hood County - Precinct #5. Rusk County - Precinct #6 and J.P. #7. Trinity County - Trinity Town, and Precinct #2. Kaufman County - Kaufman.
Which States Were Originally Included in 1890 Census Records? (49 states)

James "Speck" Thomas, Frustrations and Road Trips
In regards to the Thomas line, I've hit a wall (along with many others) with James "Speck" Thomas. He is my paternal great great great grandfather, and we know he was born about 1827 in Virginia. The earliest census record I've found him in is in 1850 when he's living in Owsley County, Kentucky with his new wife, Gelina Hundley. They are living next door to her parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Hundley.
Other researchers and myself have been stuck on his parentage or even where he came from in Virginia. There's been some speculation I understand of Tazewell County, Virginia where it seems that many Thomas families resided, but I have been unable to confirm this yet.
At any rate, by 1850 he was definitely living in Kentucky and continued to stay in Kentucky for the rest of his life as far as I can tell.
More about JAMES SPECK THOMAS and GELINA HUNDLEY:
Census 1: 1850, Owsley Co., KY – living next to Samuel and Elizabeth Hundley
Census 2: 1860, Owsley Co., KY – living near Samuel and Elizabeth Honley
Census 3: 1870, Owsley Co. Traveler’s Rest, KY
Census 4: 1880, Laurel Co., Raccoon, KY
Census 5: 1900, Laurel Co., Cross Roads, KY – listed as living with son, David Thomas
Census 6: 1910 Raccoon, Laurel Co., KY
Occupation: Farmer
About 3 or 4 years after the death of Gelina, James married Sophia Allen. The 1910 census shows them as living in Raccoon, Laurel County, Kentucky with Arminda or Armilda Thomas who is listed as the niece. As far as I know, no other Thomas researcher has investigated this further. Curious to the nature of Arminda being listed as niece, I investiaged Sophia and Arminda. I found them both living in the home of Adironam D. Allen of Perry County, KY with a WILLIAM THOMAS who was listed as his son-in-law. Sophia was listed as the wife of William Thomas. Is William Thomas perhaps the younger brother or cousin of James? I have not been able to find anything concrete on William yet other than he was born around 1840.
At any rate, I plan on taking a road trip through Kentucky and Virginia at the end of August. I'll be visiting the old Thomas cemetery on the border of Jackson and Laurel Counties where both James "Speck" Thomas and Gelina Hundley along with other Thomases are buried. I'll also be stopping by Union Ridge cemetery where many other Thomases are interred near Spurlington. McKee is also on my list as is Speck, KY and probably a few other places.

Thomas Family Research
I've been doing some genealogical research on my family off-and-on now for the past five years, and I figured this might be the easiest way to share it with the rest of the family in the meantime! Bear with me while I try to get this all sorted into the easiest format and transcribe it to this blog. It will take awhile so feel free to check back often, since so far I have 605 people, 693 records, 22 photos, and 5 stories, and I've barely scratched the surface.
If you have any addtional information, stories, photos, names, vitals, etc... please feel free to share.
Thanks,
